The Best Aquarium & Fish Tank Lights (2021 Reviews)

Last update:

Most commercial aquarium lights are designed to emit light in the wavelength range between 400-700 nm. While the range provides virtually no color impact, it looks spectacular! When you shine a strong white light into an aquarium, everything in the tank looks bright, colorful, and healthy. Many freshwater aquarium fish love to be exposed to a fair amount of bright light on a regular basis.

Full spectrum LEDs have been an option for years, but they have been very expensive and not very efficient. Not anymore! Full-spectrum LEDs have become more advanced, more energy efficient, and much more affordable.

Below are reviews for some of the best aquarium lights we were able to find!

We included a closer look at the color range for each product, followed by its pros and cons, and then our final thoughts as we wrap everything up below.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What color light is best for fish tank?

Different types of fish require different color spectra of light to survive and thrive, and there is a very wide range of color spectra that fall under the “best light source for fish” umbrella.

We all know that many light manufacturers boast about the colors their lights can produce, so which colors should you care about? The simple answer: the light spectrum that corals and live plants AND fish require.

Very narrow spectrum light is what corals and live plants thrive under. Most fish (especially the tropical species targeted by aquarium enthusiasts) thrive under this spectrum.

The fish that get the most press (because of their vibrance as a species) as fish that require this spectrum of light are Neon Tetras, Cherry Shrimp, Cardinal Tetras, Neon Blue Glofish, Blue Dwarf Gouramis, and more. Again, the list is fairly long.

Is LED light good for fish tanks?

LED lights for fish tanks are many times better than other kinds of lights.

With all the different lights designed for aquariums, it can be confusing to figure out what would work best for you and your fishtank.

There are a few different types of light you might choose to use in your tank.

One is the incandescent light. These are the lights your probably have in your house right now for lighting.

They are bright, but they are actually the least efficient lights.

If you’re using a lot of incandescent light in your tank, it might be because you are trying to light up a large space.

That would mean you are probably going to use a lot of electricity.

Another type of light that you could use is a fluorescent light.

These are commonly used as plants lights. The amount of light they produce is a concern that some people have.

Which fish tank is easiest to maintain?

Aquariums and fish tanks can be divided into three main categories when it comes to maintenance: easy, medium and difficult.

In terms of maintenance, the easiest is freshwater tanks. They require virtually zero maintenance and just a weekly water change.

The most difficult are saltwater aquariums. Saltwater aquariums require sophisticated ventilation and filtration systems. Additionally, they must be regularly monitored to ensure the PH levels are right.

The maintenance of saltwater aquariums and fish tanks is quite difficult and labor-intensive and it is recommended that they only be maintained by an experienced fish keeper.

As for freshwater aquariums, they rank in the middle of the difficulty scale.

Can a fish tank be too bright?

In my experience, it depends on the type of fish. I had a dual 33” LED strip light with 6500K color temperature. It was too bright for my fishes. Several of them were hiding most of the time. Now I use two 27” strips one with 750K color temperature and one with 10000K and only my corys can be seen. They appear happier now.

I can only imagine. I guess its like us trying to live through summer, we try to hide in cool rooms and avoid the heat.

So, as you can see, the type of light, tank size and type of fish all come into play when it comes to deciding how bright is too bright.

Conclusion

When we reviewed aquarium and fish tank lights, one really stood out from the rest, that is the Ocean Revive LED Aquarium Light Strip. This LED aquarium light strip comes ready to use as it has 3 color settings that will satisfy any taste. So if you’re looking for the best aquarium & fish tank lights out there, this could just be it.
